Dick van Engelen

Dick specializes in transactions and litigation concerning intellectual property and information technology. He focuses (i) on the protection, exploitation and transfer of technology and (ii) on the status of intellectual property assets in international financial transactions and in bankruptcy. Recent experience includes:

  • International patent litigation for companies in various industries like water treatment, oil, chemicals, plastics, poultry processing, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, tyres and packaging equipment.
  • Advising clients on international patent licensing strategies.
  • Intellectual property and unfair competition litigation for companies that are active in operating software, internet access, telecommunications, cosmetics, cable television and medical devices.
  • Advising on the financing of a technology start-up company.
  • Advising on creating security interests in intellectual property assets.
  • Advising receivers about the exploitation and sale of IP assets in bankruptcy situations. 

 

He is also a professor of industrial property law with the Centre for Intellectual Property Law (CIER) of the Molengraaff Institute at the University of Utrecht. His publications and other materials can be found at his website www.dickvanengelen.nl .

Dick is a regular speaker at seminars and an author of various publications on intellectual property, international litigation and financial transactions.

 

He is a member of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), the International Trademark Association ( INTA), the Dutch Copyright Association (ALAI) , the Benelux Trademark and Design Rights Association (BMM) and the Licensing Executives Society (LES).

 

Dick graduated from Nijmegen University in 1984 and obtained a Ph.D. at Leiden University in 1994 with a dissertation on common law intellectual property rights.

 

He started his career at the Dutch law firm Stibbe (1984-2001), where he was a partner. At Stibbe he practised intellectual property and marketing law. From 1996-1999 he was responsible for Stibbe's New York office, handling mostly structured finance and corporate transactions. Before co-founding Ventoux in 2004 he became a partner with Clifford Chance in Amsterdam and was head of that firm's Dutch IP Group (2002-2004).
